Sewing with leather?

Is leather a hard material to sew with? I'd like to make a leather bag. I probably wouldn't use real leather. It would be a faux leather that I would make it out of. Is faux leather expensive? I have to keep shortening the treadle belt on my vintage singer to maintain function. Is this normal?

The treadle belt for my vintage singer is simply a leather cord that connects at one end. I find that after very little use, the cord loosens and slips until of gripping and turning the wheel. I have to keep cutting the cord and shortening it in order to get a grip Read the rest of this entry »
