WARNING: This article is for comic relief only and should be read as such. Do not take this to the quilting store and ask the nice lady for everything on the list.

Remember the old saw, “For want of a nail, the kingdom was lost”? It is that way in quilting. Use the wrong tool, or try to quilt without the correct tool, and your masterpiece could end up in the scrap bag.

In an attempt to keep fabric shredding to a minimum, here is an exhaustive list of items that every quilter needs:

1. Sewing machine – make sure it is good and hefty, and can stand up to being glared and cussed at. Even if I have to get an old refurbished sewing machine, I always look for one with a steel case. They do not melt as easily under such intense pressure.

2. Rotary cutter – or as I like to call it: Sharp Implement of Disaster. It looks like a pizza cutter but is five times as sharp. Very efficient at slicing through layers of fabric and tips of fingers. Even when using the 24″ x 3″ ruler as a cutting guide and safety device, the rotary cutter can skitter across 3″ of plastic quicker than bare feet on a hot sidewalk.

3. 24″ Ruler – used for cutting a straight line through and drawing long quilting lines on fabric. It is also supposed to protect your fingers from the rotary cutter while slicing through material, but at only ¼” thick, it does not do a very good job.

4. Some sort of finger protection. I have tried leather, duct tape and chain mail, but they are all either too bulky, too expensive, or too hard to work with.

5. Cutting mat – used with the rotary cutter to protect the work surface and keep the rotary blade from getting dull. It also does an excellent job at keeping blood off the work surface when the rotary cutter goes a-skitterin’.

6. First aid kit with butterfly bandages.

Think you have everything? Not quite. Here are four more priceless items to have that you will not see on any other “Quilting Supplies” list:

1. Needle nose pliers to use when the sewing machine needle decides to fall out of its clamp and jam up the works.

2. Wire cutters for obstinate needles that will not come out with the pliers.

3. Magnifying glass to hunt for needle bits that have fallen into the shuttle when wire cutters were used.

4. Safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying needle bits.

If I had had these four little items, I would not have had to replace a sewing machine (which was plastic), a window and a big chunk of front yard. That is another reason why I buy metal sewing machines: they hold up better when they go through a window and a-skitterin’ across the grass.

Now that you have all your sewing and safety equipment, do not forget to add fabric and have fun!

Sewing with leather?

Is leather a hard material to sew with? I'd like to make a leather bag. I probably wouldn't use real leather. It would be a faux leather that I would make it out of. Is faux leather expensive? What kind of needle should I use? I have a Janome Magnolia machine. I think Magnolia is the name of it. Would that work fine? I've only ever worked with silk, cotton, and a strech material. I really want a leather book bag but the ones that I found that I like are really expensive. Well, not really expensive. Just more than I want to pay. Which is $45. I have to keep shortening the treadle belt on my vintage singer to maintain function. Is this normal?

The treadle belt for my vintage singer is simply a leather cord that connects at one end. I find that after very little use, the cord loosens and slips until of gripping and turning the wheel. I have to keep cutting the cord and shortening it in order to get a grip on the wheel and make it turn. Is there something I should be doing that I'm not? I can't imagine the design is as poor as it seems. I feel like this can't actually be normal.

The practice of sewing, as in using thread and needle to attach various kinds of material, has been dated to at least 20,000 years ago. Sewing is practically a universal occurrence, and the actual beginnings of it stretch back to the beginnings of history. It predates the weaving of cloth by many centuries, and was used to stitch together hides, furs, and bark for clothing and other uses.

Early sewing needles were made from bone, wood, or natural needles taken from plants as Native Americans did with the agave plant. The earliest verified sewing needles made from iron date back to the third century B.C.E. and were found in what is now Germany. Chinese archaeologists report finding a complete set of iron sewing needles and thimbles in a tomb dating from the Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 220) in China. This is the earliest known example of a thimble in history. The thimble was developed to assist early sewers to push needles through thick hides and furs, and was first made from bone, wood, leather, sometimes glass and porcelain. Later thimbles began to be made from metal, and before the 18th century dimples in a thimble had to be punched into it by hand. The thimble also became an object of beauty with thimbles made from precious and semi-precious stones, and precious metals.

The first thread was made from plant fibers and animal sinew, which was used to sew together hides and furs for clothing, blankets and shelter. Later it was found that fibers from plants and animals could be spun together to make thread. The ancient Egyptians made thread by spinning these fibers together, and devised methods of dying the thread using berries and plant matter. In China and Japan, silk fibers taken from the cocoon of the silk worm was spun to make very fine thread.

For most of the history of sewing, it was done by hand. From the simplest stitches to ornate decorative work was done with a needle, thread and a steady hand. It remained so until the first patent for a machine that “emulated hand sewing” in 1790 in England. It is not known whether there ever was a machine built from the 1790 patent.

The first functioning sewing machine was issued a patent to Barthelemy Thimonnier in France in 1830. It used a single thread and a hooked needle to make a chain stitch similar to the one used in hand embroidery. The inventor was nearly killed when enraged French tailors rioted and burned down his garment factory because they feared the machine would cause unemployment. In 1846 the American Elias Howe was issued a patent for his machine, but the mass production of the machines did not happen until the 1850’s when Isaac Singer built the first truly successful sewing machine. With needle, thread, thimble and machine, the art and craft of it has not only formed items for our use and comfort. Sewing has helped form civilization itself.

I have a Janome 3125 sewing machine, which has worked fine until today….The bobbin thread refuses to move, when I try to sew with it I get about half an inch, then won't sew any more. I have to wind the wheel backwards to get the needle out, then have to CUT the fabric free because about 20+ threads are sticking out, stuck inside the bobbin mechanism.
Does anyone know what is happening and what to do?

How many feet do you have? Or I should say, how many feet does your sewing machine have?

Once upon a time there was a sewing machine with one foot, one foot for sewing a straight stitch.

Now there are sewing machines with many feet and they all do a different job for you. They certainly make life at the sewing machine more enjoyable and easier. Some of these feet come with your machine and your manual will have the information for you on what application they are used for.

By taking the time to try these attachments for your sewing machine, you will find a whole new creative side to yourself, and you thought your machine was for sewing.

I’d like to take you through some of these sewing feet and what they can do. Your machine comes with the straight stitch foot and a zig-zag foot, these tow are normally standard. Some machines come with other feet as standard to that make or model and then there are the extra feet you can purchase to do those wonderful sewing jobs for you. I’d like to take you through these feet. These are the names as I know them, some of these may have different names with different manufacturers but the stitches they will be the same.

Braid Foot

The narrow and wide braid feet both have a hook on the front of the foot slip and a narrow tunneled groove underneath. It is used when you want to add cording or braid. The cord is laced through the hook and under the foot slip into the tunneled groove. There is a braid-guide attachment you can attach near the presser foot shank to keep the braid or cord taut while stitching, no tangles.

Buttonhole Foot

The buttonhole foot can be recognized by it’s rectangle shaped foot with thin extensions at either end, a raised square on top of the foot and small grooves on the bottom of the foot. It is similar to some embroidery feet. It makes sewing buttonholes very easy.

Eyelet Foot

I don’t know how many of you would want to be sewing eyelets but if that is what you want to do then this is the foot for you. It is a very specialized foot. It is a H-shaped flat foot, has a small cylinder shape attachment to the top surface.

Gathering Foot

This one is very handy. It is a small L-shaped foot with a slot on the bottom side. The bottom of the foot is higher at the front than the back. This causes the foot to rock when attached to the machine. This rocking creates the gathers. You set the stitch length at a higher setting to get more gathers and a normal setting to get less gathers. If you are gathering a single piece of fabric, feed the fabric under the foot or use the side slot to stitch one piece of fabric to another.

Narrow Bias Binder Foot

This foot has a coned shaped, slotted cylinder on the topside of the foot. It folds and applies the bias binding in one step.

Open-Toe Embroidery Foot

This foot will give you a view of your work so you can see the satin or decorative stitches between the widely spaced toes. There are grooves underneath to allow room for the stitches.

Pintuck Foot

This is a flat foot with grooves cut in underneath. This foot, used with a double needle will pinch and stitch lines of straight stitching in narrow raised patterns. The number of grooves will determine the spacing between the lines and the number of pattern lines. The three groove pintuck foot is used on heavier fabric or for wider designs and the for and five groove pintuck foot will be better on lightweight fabric or for narrower patterns.

Rolled Hemming Foot

If you want small double folded hems then this is the foot for you. Use it for medium to lightweight fabric. The groove on the bottom of the foot is the width of the finished hem. You will be able to sew hems with a straight stitch, zig-zag or decorative stitch. This has so many uses, think of lingerie, ruffles, curtains, scarves, table linen, wonderful.

Roller Foot

This is a very handy foot, the metal roller feeds the fabric and keeps it from stretching and bunching, great for thick, heavier fabric and fabric with a nap. Often called an even feed foot.

Ruffler Foot

This is a large foot with many components and you use it to evenly space ruffles and pleats. If you want to ruffle bigger jobs like curtains, skirts, home decor items then this foot will help enormously.

Teflon Foot

This foot is coated in teflon and we all know teflon is non-stick so this foot will stop those difficult fabrics like leather, suede or textured fabric. It allows the fabric to glide under rather than being fed. You can get it as a zig-zg or a straight stitch foot.

Walking Foot

This foot has teeth rather than a roller to feed the fabric evenly.

Welding Foot

This has two narrow claw like prongs instead of a small hole in the middle and is used for straight stitching close to the edge of a hem or seam

Zipper Foot

This is one of the best feet ever made for sewing machines, it looks like a straight stitch foot cut in half and then the outside edges joined in the center.

well, that is the more common types of the sewing machine feet available.

Most of these would be available for most machines on the market today. If you intend to do special sewing jobs then investing in the foot for that particular job could save you so much time.

There’s probably nothing worse than a torn car seat. But it happens. And when it does you may be at a lose as to how to repair it. You could take it and have a professional repair the tear or hole, but it will cost you. There are some repair kits on the market to help repair cloth, leather and vinyl car seats, which will cost you minimum. Depending on the size of the repair, the results may be good or bad. These kits generally work better on small tears or holes and may be hard to match on colors other than black and white.

Repairing Torn Leather Seats

You may have paid the extra cash for those leather seats. They look great and there’s no need to vacuum or clean them but when they get torn then you have a problem. One solution is to buy a leather repair kit to repair the seat. Here are the typical instructions for using one:

o Buy a standard leather repair kit.

o Scuff the damaged area lightly with the sandpaper provided.

o Clean the area with the alcohol swab that is also provided.

o Secure cuts or holes with a subpatch and adhesive that are provided in the kit. Fill in larger holes first with a piece of scrap leather that is also provided and fasten it in place with adhesive. With upholstery, it may be necessary to separate the tear slightly and slip the leather scrap or a subpatch into place inside the tear.

o Mix the color compound to match the color of the item you want to repair. Follow the color-matching guide that is provided in the kit. Spread the compound over the area and allow it to dry.

Another option for repairing torn leather seats is to sew them yourself. For instance, if the seat is ripped at a seam, you might be able to remove the cover from the seat and repair the seam. You’ll need a heavy-duty sewing machine with large needle and heavy thread. Or hand stitching the seam can be done, but it is a challenge since pushing a needle through genuine leather is difficult. This task requires removing the cover from the seat often requires the removal of the seat itself, from the vehicle. After getting the seat out, you’ll have to disassemble it, separating the seat from the back.

Repairing Torn Vinyl Seats

There are also repair kits for torn vinyl car seats or you can buy what you need and make the repairs. Here are is what you need to repair vinyl seats:

o Vinyl patch piece

o Vinyl adhesive

o Vinyl color (if you don’t have the right color patch piece)

Steps to Repairing:

o Cut around the hole to make it even. This will make it easier to put your patch in.

o Find a piece of vinyl that matches in color and is big enough to over fill the spot where the hole is so that no gap will appear later in your repair.

o Tuck the patch piece of vinyl into the hole gently so you do not rip it and make it bigger. Smooth the patch out so it is spread out evenly.

o Lift the damaged vinyl section up and apply the vinyl adhesive to the original vinyl upholstery. Put the adhesive on the patch piece to secure the adhesion.

o Press the two vinyl pieces together carefully. If you press too hard a gap could appear from the pieces sliding apart.

o Allow upholstery to dry for 24 hours and keep out of direct sunlight or extreme heat.

Repairing Torn Fabric Seats

There are kits available to repair rips, burns and holes in fabric upholstery seats. Here are the steps to repair:

o Kit comes with 7 fabric fiber colors, fabric adhesive, spatula, mixing bottle, screen applicator, color mix chart and complete instructions.

o Fill the damaged spot with clear adhesive.

o Apply color fibers to applicator, lay over adhesive and move gently to disperse color fabric fibers.

o Let repair dry then spray with bonding adhesive.
